After talking to Rita on the phone for about an hour, her story had inspired me. I had never met Rita and I already knew she was beautiful, amazing, strong, and a fighter. Here is Rita's story, in her very own words:
"At the end of May, 2012 I made a phone call to my doctor to inform him that I had found a lump in my left breast while doing a monthly self breast exam. In the last year and a half I had lost my mother, mother-in-law, and my younger sister. I had a mammogram, ultrasound, and a biopsy done to figure out what was going on.
On Friday, June 15th 2012 my doctor called me with biopsy results. He said, 'We got the results of your biopsy, and...unfortunately it is cancer'.
After informing my husband the results, I sat down on the couch and cried. Then, I decided I was coming out with both fists swinging! There was no other option in my mind but to win this fight!
In the words of my 13 year old son, 'Never give up and never surrender"!!!
"So, what would I do now? I would live the lesson that my mother taught me so well. I would push past every obstacle I face in life and I would be the WINNER! Every day I hear my mom's voice from heaven telling me, 'You ARE STRONG! You'll be alright'.
With the support of my family, friends, medical staff and prayers, I will continue to be strong and fight!
I am only 51 years old , I have A LOT of living to do and I AM NOT DONE YET!!"
Rita, thank you, for sharing your story with me and with everyone else! If there was one thing that she wanted to get across with her story, it would be to MAKE SURE you perform your monthly self breast exams and to look out for your health!
